The terroir

The sun-filled hills of The Collalto Estate are located approximately 48 km from the sea. This means that even though the climate is continental the moderating effect of the sea breezes will play a positive role, ensuring that grapes will get the full benefit of a long, slow ripening process, which is typical in a cooler climate.

This would benefit for instance, the Wildbacher grape, which can take up to 150 days to reach full ripeness. The soil groups can be divided into two sections: those of the hills, and those on the eastern side of the river Piave. With experimentation and trials, the Collalto family has, after 1000 years of growing grapes on this Estate, certainly achieved optimum results by marrying the correct grape varietal to the correct soil group.
